I love doing a little craft with my kids before each holiday. It sort of brings the holiday spirit around and is fun for the whole family. Today, the girls had some of their friends over and we made Easter Nests. It was so much fun and the girls thought they were pretty delicious too. It is a simple craft, if you just remember a few things. Basically, you are making a rice krispie treat in the shape of a nest, but to really form it, you have to follow a few steps. First, make sure you spray your hands with cooking spray. Second, squash a handful of the marshmallow/rice krispie mixture in your hands into a ball. Third, flatten it with the palm of your hand. Finally, press down with your fingers in the middle to form a little well in the middle for the “nest”. Fill with peeps and chocolate robins eggs and you have your Easter Nests! We are using them as part of the centerpiece on our Easter table, but you could use them for decorations, or just as a fun dessert after Easter dinner. Another option to make them look even more realistic is to use chow mein noodles. I thought those would look very realistic, but when I suggested it, I got a lot of strange looks (why would we use those? Gross! I believe was one of my daughter’s comments.) So, we went with the old standby-rice krispies. I thought they turned out cute and they were pretty fun to make too! Hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter together! 🙂
Easter Nests
3 tblsp butter
4 cups miniature marshmallows
6 cups rice krispies cereal
Assorted colors peeps
Robins Egg Malted Milk Balls or candy coated chocolate eggs
Melt butter and marshmallows. Mix in rice krispies. Spray hands with cooking spray and while mixture is still warm, form into small fist sized nests. Fill with peeps and eggs. Let cool.
I saw this on a craft website a few weeks back and I couldn’t help but make this with my kids! They had a blast creating them (and nibbling a few twizzlers themselves!) and they looked so pretty once we put them in the bag with the “gold” and tied it all together with some green and white ribbon. They will be giving them to teachers tomorrow and are super excited! My little guy wasn’t exactly making them to pass out, but he and I had some fun sorting all the twizzlers into different color piles, making it easier for the girls to pick their rainbow colors. These are really simple, super cute and make a great treat or gift for someone on St. Patrick’s Day! Enjoy!
What you will need:
1 package of Twizzlers Rainbow Flavors
1 package of Rolos
Clear plastic bags
Green Ribbon
Assemble twizzlers by rainbow colors-red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple and then bend into rainbow shape. Slide into clear plastic bag. Add rolos to fill underneath. Secure bag with green ribbon. Pass out to friends, family, teachers and see them smile! 🙂
HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY! 🙂
I love surprising my kids in the morning with things. Now, DO NOT get me wrong…this does not happen that often. Most mornings about all I can manage is dragging myself out of bed, pouring cereal in bowls for the kids, and getting us dressed and out the door in the nick of time for school. But, if I do a little planning ahead, I can make the morning a little special.
I do this for the first day of school by putting a vase of flowers in the middle of the table and a small gift and good luck card by each of the kid’s places. I set the table with some fun paper plates and make a special breakfast. Sometimes, I will even pour orange juice into plastic champagne glasses and do a toast! The kids love it and we have a lot of smiles before a day that brings out the nerves begins.
I like doing things like this for holidays too. This year for Valentine’s Day, I surprised the kids with a decorated table and heart shaped pancakes with strawberry sauce. The kids were thrilled and I sent them off to school with a smile.
It just takes a little planning, a touch of creativity and a mom who is going on adrenaline, excited to see her kid’s faces, to make it happen. Check back here frequently and I will share some of my ideas for making the morning special! 🙂
